| English in Class X | Two papers: English Language and Literature in English | One English paper covering language and literature |
| Breadth | More detail in most subjects | A tighter, more focused syllabus |
| Schools in India | Fewer | Many more, in almost every city |

When ICSE suits a child
ICSE suits a child who likes reading and writing and does not mind a heavier syllabus. The two English papers build strong written English, and the extra detail in Science and Social Studies gives a wide base. Many families also like that the ICSE years leave room for languages and the arts.
When CBSE suits a child
CBSE suits a child who wants a focused syllabus and, later, a direct line to the NCERT books that JEE Main, NEET and CUET draw on. Because there are far more CBSE schools across India, it is also the simpler choice if your work may take the family to another city.
Entrance exams: does the board matter?
Less than people think. JEE Main, NEET and CUET are written on Class XI and XII content close to the NCERT books. CBSE students study those books in class. ISC students cover most of the same ground and usually add NCERT books to their revision. What matters more is regular practice and testing in Classes XI and XII.
Switching boards at Class XI
Students switch in both directions after Class X. The adjustment is mostly about a new set of books and a different exam pattern, and most of it happens in the first term. If your child is switching, ask the new school what help it gives in those first months.
What we tell parents
Choose the board for the child in front of you, not for an exam six years away. Then choose the school on things you can check: registration, published results, labs, testing and a visit on a working day. Our eight-point checklist works for either board.
In 2026 Stepping Stone had a 100% pass in Class X and Class XII across its campuses, 29 students scored 90% or more, and the toppers scored 97.4% (Class X) and 97.0% (Class XII). The full list of names and percentages is published with the original PDF.
